10 Fun Activities to do With Your Family This Fall

There's something magical about fall...the air's a little cooler, but still warm enough for us to enjoy being outside. And like summer, it goes too quickly. Before long, we'll be dragging out our snow boots and taking our van in for winter tires.

So, before we get ahead of ourselves, make the most of fall with these fun activities to do with your family.

1. Do a Family Photo Shoot

With the changing colors and nicer weather, fall is the perfect time for a family photo shoot! Plus, fall outfits are fun and easy to coordinate. If you’re planning on doing personalized Christmas cards this year, now is the best time to get your photos ready before everyone else is scrambling to get their family pictures and all the photographers are booked up.

2. Get out in Nature

Cincinnati is beautiful at any time of the year, but especially so during the fall season. Plan a hike nearby to get some exercise and spend quality time with your family. If you have little ones who complain about being bored or tired, turn it into a fall scavenger hunt! Who can be the first to find a squirrel with nuts in his mouth or a leaf with three different colors on it?

Fall is also the perfect time to spend a weekend camping. The weather is cool enough that you won’t be miserable during the day, plus campfires and s’mores are so much better when you’re cuddled up under the night stars!

3. Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin patches are the perfect place for a family day outing. Cincinnati has plenty of fun patches where you can pick pumpkins, explore a corn maze, take a hayride and more. Let the fun continue once you get home by baking the pumpkin seeds and having a fun pumpkin-carving competition!

4. Movie Marathon

With the fall season comes a plethora of seasonal movies. Spend a day watching all four Halloweentown movies or the worst scary movies you can find. Make the marathon cozier with a bunch of blankets and pillows on the floor and plenty of popcorn and hot chocolate. Bonus points if you stay in your PJ’s all day!

5. Have a Picnic

If hiking or camping is too much for your family, pack a lunch and have a picnic instead. Bring a basket with sandwiches, chips and fun fall sweets and enjoy a nice meal under a shady tree. Your picnic can be in a park or just in your backyard, just remember a comfy blanket and a football or frisbee.

6. Y’s Family Fridays

The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati offers plenty of fun things to do for the entire family! Check out our events calendar to see what activities are going on at your local Y this month. Most of these events are completely free! Join us for our Family Friday’s. Plus we have Parent’s Night Out that will have lots of activities for kids while parents enjoy a date night.

7. Spend a Day at the Zoo

The Cincinnati Zoo is fun for all ages and since summer is over, it will be less crowded. Plus, as the weather cools down, animals will spend more time out in the open, perfect for viewing! The Cincinnati Zoo also has their annual Hallzooween event every weekend of October, which is included in the price of admission.

8. Get Spooked

October is the best time to embrace your spooky-loving side! Cincinnati has a variety of haunted houses and attractions to give you a scare. There are also haunted houses that offer “lights on” versions, so the whole family can enjoy the slightly scary seasonal attractions.

9. Make Fall Crafts

Have some fun with the new season by making some easy fall crafts! Buy a candle making kit and infuse your own concoction of fall scents or preserve leaves in glycerin to enjoy year-round. Pinterest is teeming with fun and simple DIY ideas for any age. The Y will have fun crafts through all of our kids programs – come visit a branch to see what we have going on.

10. Attend Local Events

Many churches and communities offer fall festivals that you can attend with your kids and enjoy trunk or treating, games, food, and more. Find out what’s happening at your local YMCA to make the most out of your Y membership.
