Where Can I volunteer?
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I volunteer at the YMCA?
We invite everyone to use their passions and skills to help make the Y purpose possible. With a focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, Y volunteers give those around them the resources and support they need to be healthy, confident, connected, and secure. We have opportunities across all branches and programs in our association. Visit our project catalog to view current needs. You can sort by branch location, keyword, and project start date to find an opportunity that is the best fit for you. If you want to share your specialized passion with the Y and the community, please contact volunteering@myy.org to discuss a unique opportunity.
Are there specific requirements to volunteer?
Depending on the volunteer opportunity, different credentials must be met to volunteer. All volunteers must sign a YMCA Waiver of Liability and Volunteer Relationship agreement. Some projects require volunteers to complete background check paperwork if they are volunteering with an ongoing project that involves access to data, finances, and policymaking, or if they are going to be directly involved with youth and other vulnerable populations. Opportunities such as coaching and participating in licensed childcare do require additional credentials and training. In our commitment to strengthening the foundations of our community, the safety and well-being of our participants, members, staff, and volunteers are top priority. Screenings and authorizations establish a secure, best-fit environment for all.
How do I register?
To get started, visit the project catalog to find a volunteer activity that interests you. You will be able to show your interest by clicking the volunteer button for the project. Volunteer Matters is our one-stop shop for registration and opportunities. For the safety of our community, all volunteers must register using VolunteerMatters. You'll then be asked to provide any extra clearance information needed for the position. If you are not sure of what you would like to do, you may fill out our basic questionnaire and a member of the Y staff will reach out to discuss opportunities.
I signed up for a volunteer position. What happens next?
We're excited to review your application made through our VolunteerMatters system! A project organizer will get in touch with you to discuss any additional questions, orientations, or next steps before you start volunteering. Once your clearances are approved, you're good to go!
Do I have to be a member of the YMCA to volunteer?
No. While we encourage all our members to join us in service, everyone is welcome to join our volunteer team and make an impact in our community.
Do you have student internships or volunteering for credit?
High school and undergraduate internships are available as well as school-required volunteer service hours, but these opportunities vary by branch and by department throughout the year. Most internships are unpaid.
Do I have to be over the age of eighteen to volunteer?
