Volunteer Reconnection: From Pool to Purpose

You never know who you’ll meet—or reconnect with—when volunteering at the Y.

Ken and Stuart, longtime members of the Powel Crosley, Jr. YMCA (PCY), have always been familiar faces around the facility—whether in a group class or enjoying a swim. Yet, neither knew the other was still part of the Y community… until they both signed up to help at our Floats With Fathers event this summer.

Ken had started exploring volunteer opportunities before his retirement earlier this year. With encouragement and occasional emails from Tara, our Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, he began signing up for one-time events that fit his schedule. Stuart joined the same Father’s Day celebration, unknowingly stepping into a sweet surprise.

“Kenny? What are you doing here?” Stuart asked in disbelief. The two hadn’t seen each other in decades—despite having grown up as neighbors.

That moment of recognition turned into reconnection. Childhood friends rediscovered through the simple act of service.

Volunteering at the Y isn’t just about giving back—it’s about finding belonging, building community, and sometimes, rekindling lifelong friendships. As Ken and Stuart can tell you, every project holds the potential for something meaningful.

Whether you’re meeting new people or crossing paths with old friends, the Y is a place where community grows—one volunteer at a time.
